This scam has been doing the rounds for years, so it must be having some success at scamming businesses out of their money.
The latest version uses a more aggressive style of scare-mongering than previous versions, with a subject line of [Your Website] Domain Expiration.
It goes on to advise that "This is a notification that your service is about to be suspended. ACT IMMEDIATELY." The email is personalised with your name and contact details (which have been taken directly from your publicly-available Domain Name ownership details).
You can safely ignore these emails, as they actually relate to a so-called search engine optimisation service - something they admit to in the fine print at the bottom of the email ... "This may end in making it difficult for your customers to locate you, using search engines on the web." This line we suppose gives them plausible deniability, as they have "technically" advised you what the invoice is really for. Watch out for this line, as it is a common indicator of this kind of scam.
If you receive any emails such as this, and are unsure what to do, do not hesitate to contact us before sending a payment!
"Thanks so much for your wonderful service over the years. You've been so efficient and responsive whenever we've needed anything done."
